The market for AI automation consultants has grown rapidly — and so has the range in quality. A good consultant transforms your operations. A bad one takes your money, hands you a half-built system, and disappears. Here's how to tell the difference before you sign anything.
What to Look for in an AI Automation Consultant
- Industry-specific experience: Automation for a dental practice is different from automation for a law firm. A consultant with relevant experience will ask better questions, propose better solutions, and build faster. Ask specifically: "Have you built something similar for my type of business? Can I see an example?"
- Clear deliverables: Before any work begins, you should know exactly what will be built, what it will do, what tools will be used, and what you'll receive at the end. "I'll automate your business" is not a deliverable. "I'll build a 5-step lead follow-up sequence connecting your Typeform, CRM, and SMS gateway" is.
- Outcome-focused pricing: Good consultants can give you a reasonable estimate of the ROI you should expect. They'll say "based on your lead volume and current conversion rate, this automation should generate approximately X additional clients per month." If they can't speak to outcomes, they're selling you output, not results.
- You own the system: The automation should be built in your accounts, using your tools. If the consultant is building inside a platform they control, you're at risk of losing access or being held hostage to their pricing if the relationship ends.
Questions to Ask Before Hiring
- Can you walk me through a specific automation you've built for a business like mine?
- What happens if a tool or integration breaks after you've delivered the project?
- Who owns the accounts and infrastructure? What happens if I stop working with you?
- How do you measure whether the automation is working?
- What's your process if I want to add to or change the automation after delivery?
Red Flags
- Promises results without understanding your business first
- Pushes you toward a specific platform with a referral incentive
- Can't explain clearly what they're building and why
- No case studies or verifiable client results
- No post-delivery support plan
